The Studio
The 100 House is a hidden gem located on Salt Spring island. This boutique reformer studio offers customized private training and small group classes.
The Equipment
Meet the “REFORMER”
The Pilates reformer, after mat exercises, is the most popular and used piece of Pilates equipment. It’s a sleek pull system consisting of a sliding carriage and springs with varying degrees of tension. The reformer is an adaptable machine full of variety that is perfect for beginners, challenging for the avid fitness enthusiast, and suitable for those recovering from an injury.
Meet the “SPRINGBOARD”
Like the reformer the springboard uses spring resistance, but the feeling and effects are very different. Each limb works independently on the Springboard. This adds a significant coordination challenge – for the brain and for the body! It also makes the Springboard a great tool for working on imbalances.
The Teacher
Jenn Nurse
Founder | Pilates Teacher
Hi! I’m Jenn Nurse. Here is a little insight into my life and how I became a Pilates Teacher.
Group Classes
We have several group class offerings for all skills levels. Our classes are limited to 4 or less, and you will always use the spring driven equipment. Expect a lot of personal attention to your movements and form.
Personal Training
Our individualized personal training focus on each clients particular needs. Is personal training right for you?
Faq
Comfortable athletic wear, free of buttons, snaps, and zippers. Baggy shorts should be avoided as we incorporate inversions and straddle stretches in our workouts. We require socks to be worn in the studio. Sticky bottom socks provide the best grip throughout a workout. If you do not own sticky socks, we have them for purchase at the studio.
Once you’ve completed a Free Intro session we will go over package options with you for either privates, duets and or small group classes. All sessions use the spring driven equipment. Expect a lot of cueing, and personal attention.
Once you’ve completed the Free Intro Session, recommendations will be made on class type and level to suite your needs.
Benefits of Pilates
Regardless of age, gender or current fitness level. No matter your goals and challenges, Pilates can help to:
- Reduce the effect of joint problems. Because it’s a low-impact activity, Pilates addresses and reduces the effects of joint problems without causing stress on the joints themselves.
- Increase range of motion. Most Pilates exercises are adaptable to your range of motion.
- Improve core strength and stability. There is not a single Pilates exercise that does not have a core element to it.
- Build strength. Pilates can be a serious strength-building routine because of its central focus on the core.
- Relieve Stress. Certain breathing techniques have a tremendous effect in relieving stress. One of the central focuses of Pilates is connecting breathing with the body.
Pilates is complementary to activities you’re probably already doing. No matter what your preferred mod of exercise – running, playing tennis, golf or others – Pilates provides benefits that will help you get better at your other activities, while limiting impact and reducing risk of injury.
Pilates addresses muscle imbalances and combats the effects of sitting too much. Most of us spend a good portion of the day sitting down, which leads to shortened hip flexors and hamstrings – which can lead to inhibited gluteus muscles, weak core musculature and poor posture. All of these contribute to lower back pain – a common affliction of adults world wide. By stretching what needs to be released, strengthening the core, and getting your glutes to fire properly again, you can significantly reduce back pain,
Why Pilates?
Attention to core support and full-body fitness, including the breath and the mind, provide a level of integrative fitness that is hard to find elsewhere. It is also a reason that Pilates is popular in rehab settings, as well as with athletes who find that Pilates is a great foundation for any kind of movement they do.
